In the manner of 1 CONC many villages of the area, it is a long straggling settlement, the more 1 CONC so because it unites the former hamlets of Sutton and Bonington. The most 1 CONC conspicuous features inherited from the past are the Hall, a fine Queen 1 CONC Anne mansion, and the Manor, a Victorian house which replaced a 1 CONC decaying Tudor building. There were two huge rectories (one still 1 CONC occupied by the rector, the other used for offices and accommodation), 1 CONC two churches, three pubs, two chapels and seven shops. The other 1 CONC prominent feature of the village is Nottingham University's School of 1 CONC Agriculture, founded in 1895 as the Midland Dairy Institute. Its 1 CONC beautiful campus is the academic home of between 400 and 500 students, 1 CONC many of them from overseas. Like so many villages of the area the local 1 CONC economy was based on agriculture and framework knitting. It is 1 CONC astonishing to discover that in the middle of the 19th Century there were 1 CONC as many as 50 workshops making stockings here. As this traditional craft 1 CONC declined (the last surviving workshop can be seen in the garden of 80 1 CONC Main Street), and agriculture became more mechanised, new employment 1 CONC opportunities arose with the railways (whose line crosses the village), 1 CONC with the corn and spinning mill at nearby Zouch, and with the famous 1 CONC brick and pot works known as Hathernware. Now, there is only one working 1 CONC farm left in the village and though the School of Agriculture employs 1 CONC many local people, most people commute to work. New events, fast becoming 1 CONC traditions, have been established in recent years, and perhaps the most 1 CONC popular is the 'Garden Walkabout', which is held on the last Saturday and 1 CONC Sunday afternoons of June. 1 CONT Villagers are invited to open their gardens to the public, to raise money 1 CONC for charity, and between 30 and 40 families usually on other weekends the 1 CONC very attractive grounds of the Hall and the Manor are also open for 1 CONC charity, so Sutton Bonington has something of a reputation for its 1 CONC gardens. A reputation of a different kind is attributed to a former 1 CONC resident, Mr W. Tate, who was headmaster of the village school from 1 CONC 1926 to 1933. He was passionateabout loal history and introduced the 1 CONC subject into the school syllabus. Later he wrote The Parish Chest, 1 CONC which is still a standard work for local historians. 1 CONT Later in life he became a lecturer in Historical Studies at Leeds 1 CONC University, and was regarded as 'one of the most important agrarian 1 CONC historians of the century'. Another village character was Mr William 1 CONC Riste, who died at the age of 30 in 1773, and who was known as the 1 CONC wonderful Nottinghamshire Giant as he grew to be 7 feet 4 1/2 inches 1 CONC high. His hands and limbs were equally gigantic and he was viewed three 1 CONC times by the Royal Family. King George III presented him with a suit of 1 CONC scarlet silk. On the main road, next to the school, is a large stone 1 CONC house, probably late 17th Century, known as Hobgoblins. Its stone arch 1 CONC and walls were built from stones of the old Repingdon Grange, which had 1 CONC belonged to the priors of Repton for more than 350 years. 1 CONT There seems to be no evidence for the popular belief that a secret tunnel 1 CONC connects it to St Anne's church but its claim to be haunted appears to 1 CONC be more substantial. Locals claim that a ghost/being/spirit can be 1 CONC heard climbing the stairs, indeed, some have given detailed accounts of 1 CONC actually hearing the footsteps on the stairs. 1 CONT WEST LEAKE. Approached along winding country roads, West Leake is a 1 CONC small village with one main street and a population of around 100 1 CONC people. It is attractive, unspoilt and rural although within reach of 1 CONC Nottingham Loughborough, East Midlands Airport and the M1 motorway. The 1 CONC village name is recorded in the Domesday Survey (1086) as Leche derived 1 CONC from the brook which flows through the village. The village has two 1 CONC Roman tracks on its boundaries and there is evidence of Roman 1 CONC occupation in the area. Along the boundary of the brook stands a 1 CONC medieval moated manor site with its fishponds still in evidence. This was 1 CONC occupied by the lords of the manor from 1150 to 1750. There were two 1 CONC mills, one a windmill and the other a water mill which was granted by 1 CONC King John in 1200. In later years the village consisted mainly of 1 CONC Elizabethan and Georgian farmsteads and farm labourers cottages. 1 CONT Today, the farms and farm buildings along with the cottages have been 1 CONC sold for private homes gone are the thatched cttages and the village 1 CONC pump. The farmlands have been taken over by an agricultural consortium 1 CONC with the loss of many hedgerows, and many of the ancient footpaths have 1 CONC been diverted around the edges of the fields. The many ponds have been 1 CONC filled in. The main street is at times busy with traffic: gone are the 1 CONC days when cricket was played across the street. A few new houses have 1 CONC been built since 1950, but care is taken to maintain the character of 1 CONC the village. 1 CONT The 12th Century church that stands in the centre of the village is both 1 CONC a part of history and an active influence in society. The oldest part 1 CONC of the church has a small Norman window and a blocked up Norman door on 1 CONC the north side. It was enlarged in the 13th Century and restored in 1 CONC 1878. It contains three interesting medieval monuments, including an 1 CONC effigy of Sir John Leek who is buried in the church. There is a more 1 CONC modern window on the south side, depicting a view of the church and the 1 CONC local scene, well designed in delicate colours and with interesting 1 CONC detail, including a snail and a spiders cobweb. The Mills family played 1 CONC an important part in the village. William E. Mills, born in 1780, 1 CONC started a basketmaking business: the osier beds were nearby. He worked 1 CONC entirely for the London trade and made letter trays for the Houses of 1 CONC Parliament. His sons and grandsons spread throughout the surrounding 1 CONC villages taking their trade with them. Williams house, with its Tudor 1 CONC chimney, comprised a village inn, a basketmaking shop and a village 1 CONC oven, where the villagers took their bread and pies to be baked. 1 CONT A village school was built in 1850 by Lord Belper (of neighbouring 1 CONC Kingston-on-Soar) who at that time owned the village. Children paid one 1 CONC penny per week to be educated. Until the Education Act of 1880 there was 1 CONC much absenteeism. Children stayed away to help their parents in the 1 CONC fields, some helping their mothers in the basket trade by buffing 1 CONC (peeling) the willows. At this time farm labourers=92 wages were low, 1 CONC 10 shillings per week, and any had large families who lived only on 1 CONC bread and vegetables. In inclement weather a labourer would not be paid 1 CONC if he could not work. Lady Belper was concerned at the low standard of 1 CONC living of the children and she provided bread and cheese in the school. 1 CONC In the sewing lessons, it is recorded that Elizabeth and Sarah Mills 1 CONC task was to make by hand the parsons shirts and nightshirts. The 1 CONC school has now closed and is used as the village hall. A vigorous 1 CONC committee keeps the building in fine shape nd it is widely usd, 1 CONC regularly by the Women=92s Institute and the Young Farmers, and also for 1 CONC flower and vegetable shows, whist drives and other social occasions. 1 CONT [BOTH EXTRACTS FROM PAGE 151-152 AND 177-178 OF =93THE NOTTINGHAMSHIRE 1 CONC VILLAGE BOOK=94, Compiled by the Nottinghamshire Federation of Women=92s 1 CONC Institutes from notes and illustrations sent by Institutes in the 1 CONC County, Countryside Books, Newbur and Nottingham Federation of 1 CONC Women=92s Institutes, Newark, UK. 1989. It may be that William Mills father was Robert Mills, who was 1 CONC born in about 1744. 1 CONT 1 CONT If you have anything at all which may shed some light on this Mills 1 CONC connection, or the interesting history of the Mills family in the 1 CONC villages of Sutton Bonington and West Leake, please do not hestitate to 1 CONC contact me further. 1 CONT Peter Collins 1 CONT Garrison Communications 1 CONT Brisbane Queensland Australia 1 CONT Email: petercol@@gil.ipswichcity.qld.gov.au 1 CONT Snail: 6 Kent Street RED HILL QLD 4059 AUSTRALIA 0 @I0175@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth /Gascoyne/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 MAR 1839 2 PLAC St. Michaels P., Sutton-, Bonington 1 DEAT 2 DATE 30 JAN 1909 2 PLAC West Leake, Nottinghamshire, Eng 1 FAMS @F221@ 1 FAMS @F004@ 1 FAMC @F007@ 1 NOTE @NI0175@ 0 @NI0175@ NOTE 1 CONC An obit from the March 1909 issue of "the Deanery Magazine", 1 CONC Nottinghamshire, England on the Mother of Joe Mills.
